Read below for important information regarding your Mandatory Advising hold.
First-Year Students (Freshmen)
All first-year students will be required to meet with the College of Letters & Science at least once during their first year at UC Davis. Please check your email for further information on the hold and how to remove it.
Second-Year Students (Sophomores)
Second-year students (this does not include Transfer students) are recommended, but not required, to meet with a major advisor once during this year. Students will be receiving holds in Winter Quarter. The goals and objectives of mandatory advising for second year students are to engage with co-curricular activities, learn about transferable skills, and consider next steps towards your professional goals.
We recommend all students to do the following:
- Review your major requirements and department opportunities
- Review your major worksheets and create or update your academic plan on OASIS
- Come for drop-in advising
We encourage you to take some time to learn about opportunities available to you, such as research, internships, independent study, and studying abroad.
- Visit the Career Center and attend an advising meeting, sign up for their workshops, or visit their Career Fairs.
- We encourage you to develop a resume that you will continue to build upon on in the next two years.
- Get started on finding areas of research that interest you by using the Undergraduate Research Center, and connecting with your department faculty.
- Explore study abroad opportunities, such as Quarter/Summer Abroad, Internships Abroad, or UCEAP.
- Take classes in fields of interest outside your major. You can find a comprehensive list of minors available at UC Davis here.
- Understand the resources available to you as an undergraduate student, including academic resources, financial, housing, and employment resources, and student health resources.
Here are also some advising resources and recommendations if you are experiencing any academic difficulties:
- Attend Instructor or TA Office Hours
- Attending Tutoring hours if available

- Attend a Success Coaching and Learning Strategies Workshop or schedule an appointment with a Success Coach
- Schedule an advising appointment with our EHE Advising Center by going to appointments.ucdavis.edu and selecting “Economics, History and East Asian Studies.”
- Attend an EHE Advising Center Workshop (TBA)

Second Years: No action is needed to remove your hold at this time. Your hold will be removed automatically on February 3, 2025.
First-Year Transfer Students (Juniors)
First-year Transfer students (Juniors) are required to meet with a major advisor Fall 2024. Transfer students will be receiving holds in Fall Quarter. The goals of mandatory advising for first year transfer students are to engage with co-curricular activities, learn about transferable skills, and plan next steps towards your professional goals.
To remove your hold, please follow these steps:
MANDATORY REQUIREMENT:
Make an appointment with an Economics, History or East Asian Studies staff advisor
- When scheduling your appointment, please select: Reason - Hold
OPTIONAL:
- Create an Academic Plan and have it reviewed by the Economics, History, and East Asian Studies Advising Center to ensure you are on track to complete the major requirements at the end of two years. Complete an Academic Plan on OASIS and have it reviewed by the Economics, History, and East Asian Studies advising team. If you choose to submit a plan, we will provide feedback on your scheduled course selection for the year. Please name the Academic Plan “Transfer Academic Plan 2024-2025”.
- Check with The College of Letters and Science Undergraduate Education & Advising Office to ensure you are on track to complete the university and college requirements.
Once you have completed one of the mandatory steps above, the academic advisor will submit a request to release your hold. Your hold may take up to 2 business weeks to release. Please note: This hold will not affect your Winter Quarter 2025 Pass 1 registration.
Fourth-Year Students (Seniors)
Seniors students are recommended to meet with a major advisor once during their final year. You will receive this hold with your primary major during Fall Quarter. The goals of mandatory advising for graduating students are to plan for your transition out of college and finalize your next steps towards your professional goals. Once you see this hold on your account via Schedule Builder and OASIS, you will need to follow the next step:
MANDATORY REQUIREMENT: Complete the SHORT SURVEY
- The survey is meant to help you focus on post-graduation and professional goals, as well as refer you to campus resources that may help in your transition out of college. It will take approximately 5 minutes to complete, and is provided to help you reflect on your next steps once you graduate from UC Davis.
RECOMMENDED:
- Submit an Academic Plan to your major advisor. It is strongly recommended to complete an Academic Plan on OASIS and submit it to your major advisor only. The purpose of this is to ensure you are on track to complete the major requirements by the end of the academic year. If you choose to submit a plan, we will provide feedback on your scheduled course selection for the year. Please name the Academic Plan “Graduation Plan 2024-2025”.
- Request a degree check from the College of Letters and Science Undergraduate Education & Advising Office. It is strongly recommended to get a degree check from the College of Letters and Science to ensure you are completing all university and college requirements.
Once you have completed the mandatory step above, the academic advisor will submit a request to release your hold. Your hold may take up to 2 business weeks to release. Please note: This hold will not affect your Winter Quarter 2025 Pass 1 registration.
