Passed/Not Passed

Passed/Not Passed (P/NP) Grading for Major Requirements

Office of the University Registrar (OUR): Passed/Not Passed (P/NP) Grading Policies

For the Economics, History, and East Asian Studies majors, students are allowed to take major course(s) on a Passed/Not Passed (P/NP) basis. This includes ECN Core courses and HIS Seminar courses. Our department will allow P/NP grading provided that students have satisfied the following requirements:

It is important to note that with P/NP grading, the passing grade cutoff is set at a C- grade or better. With letter-grading, the passing grade cutoff is set at a D- grade or better. If you use P/NP grading, your GPA is not affected in any manner. If you receive a P grade, this counts towards your overall degree units the same as passing a letter-graded course. If you receive an NP grade, you will not receive the units from the course the same as failing a letter-graded course, but your GPA will not be impacted negatively.

Please ensure you review the deadline for P/NP: https://registrar.ucdavis.edu/calendar/quarter. See the College of Letters & Science regarding any late/retroactive requests.

While students are allowed to opt for P/NP grading towards their major requirements, it is also important to understand how this grading mode may impact future graduate program applications. If you are thinking about applying to graduate programs, meet with an advisor in your major or with Pre-Grad Advising to discuss your questions.
